Thank you to Cara for this guest post about how Connecta helped her discover the joy of carrying her twins!
Before I discovered I was having twins, I imagined carrying my baby in comfy slings, popping into stores here and there, enjoying being mobile while bonding with my baby. I loved the idea of keeping my baby close and wondered if I’d be able to avoid buying a pushchair all together!
And so when I discovered I was carrying two babies I was shocked on more than one level, as many would be. While I was obviously excited to be getting ‘two for the price of …uurhhhm.. one’, I also felt like I was watching my active lifestyle drift away before my very eyes. How would I get around with two babies? How would I comfort both of them when they cried?
And while I did my research, popped along to my local sling library while pregnant to get trained up on wrapping two in a stretchy sling and seeing that there was hope, that it was possible, I found it far trickier once they’d arrived! Constant feeding to keep my hungry boys happy meant there weren’t many chances to practice popping them in and out of a stretchy sling and get out and about. And they got too big for it so quickly.
Over those early months, I also tried two ring slings, and while this was a novelty, I wasn’t practiced enough and was nervous about carrying them incorrectly for any extended period (sometimes they just seemed uncomfortable).
The months went by. Here and there I would hire a carrier to try, including the Twingo once the boys were sturdy enough and could support their heads, which was fun, but I wasn’t sold…
And then, for some reason, having seen mums around using Connectas, I bought two with complete confidence this would be the winning ticket to tandem wearing my boys. And, unlike many a wasted baby purchase of such spontaneity, this time I’d got it exactly right!
My husband and I chose our favourite fabrics, the Connectas arrived and we headed out with them on our fronts. Oh the freedom! We were so comfy and the boys would fall asleep immediately after gazing up at us smiling, happy to be so close to mum or dad.
And then one day I decided to attempt the double carry, first loading one baby on my back and the next on my front.
Unlike a tandem carrier where the weight is all loaded on the one set of straps, which may seem less clunky, the two Connectas distributed the weight perfectly across my back as an X and then also across my shoulders in the backpack carry. Wearing my slightly heavier boy on the back meant I wasn’t stooped forward, in fact, it felt so balanced and comfortable I wondered how far I could walk. I started out slowly though as I still wasn’t feeling all that strong, but strangely as the boys got bigger, particularly around 15 months, I got stronger carrying them both and so began doing it more and more.
Almost every time they would still drop off to sleep – they couldn’t seem to resist it. As I load them in, even now at 20 months, they get incredibly excited, putting their arms up to be picked up next. They’re able to have me close to point out cars and trees and teach them words. They like pressing the pedestrian crossing button at the lights. They like to have their feet tickled while we walk. I love that time having them both so close, it’s the kind of bonding a twin mum can feel she often lacks when juggling the needs of two.
I hope to be able to continue carrying them for a while longer, as I still occasionally do for short distances. Plus, there is such freedom being double-stroller free and being able to quickly get them from car to house, or into nursery, by quickly loading one onto my back and carrying the other – this I never thought I’d be able to do with twins.
I am so grateful for the simple, sturdy design of the Connecta and for giving me more freedom to enjoy my boys and keep them close.
