With Spring just around the corner, thanks to Hazel for the latest post on the Winter Wellness theme! What better way to stay active and have lots of fun whilst keeping your baby close?
I’ve loved the freedom babywearing has given me to get out and about with Leo and we have enjoyed many hours of walks over the last 9 months with him happily sat in our Connecta (including our sponsored ramble for Children in Need).
I recently decided that maybe it was time to do something a bit more energetic and I booked to join in with ‘Sling Swing’ in Prestwich near Manchester, which is a dance class you do whilst babywearing. I’d watched some YouTube videos and thought it looked fun but it always seemed to be booked up as it is very popular.
I was a bit nervous before I went as I am not the most coordinated or a natural dancer but I quickly realised it doesn’t matter and it is a great class which we both love. I have noticed a lot of the babies will fall asleep with the gentle rocking movements, and I have never heard any of the babies crying. Leo tends to have a big grin on his face as he loves music and me dancing around with him. I have gone into a class feeling the effects of sleep deprivation and come out in a great mood singing Lionel Richie for the rest of the day!
Babywearing is great for bonding with baby and coming together as a group to learn routines and have fun is great for mum’s (and dad’s!) mental and physical health. The endorphins that are released from dancing and the oxytocin from holding your baby close, all go a long way towards improving health.
The sling of choice in class is overwhelmingly Connecta. Nikki who runs the class is a fellow sling library volunteer and peer supporter and carries her 18 month old daughter Ellie in a customised Connecta. She has a number of Connectas to loan out for anyone that comes without and has managed to convert many a ‘Sling Swinger’ to buy their own.
I would recommend doing Sling Swing or something similar to anyone who wants to do some light exercise, have lots of laughs and keep their babies close for cuddles! It doesn’t feel like exercising and it was really nice to do a class for me whilst not having to worry about childcare.
Have you tried Sling Swing? How else do you use your Connecta to help you stay active? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
