Me and My Connecta: Week Five
Thank you to Nicola for the fifth post in our Me and My Connecta series, where happy babywearers help us spread the Connecta love by telling us all about their experiences. Please get in touch if you would like to get involved!
Which Connecta(s) do you have?
The Lightys started with a borrowed standard baby Connecta in Giraffe which a friend on my Facebook baby group kindly sent Mrs Lighty in the post to try out. We loved it and used it so much that we quickly bought our own standard baby Connecta in the Space Fun print.
When I was looking to buy my own, I really liked the girlyness and deep blue of the Queen Anne Butterflies and Benedictus Peacocks print, but I understand that these are currently out of print, so I went for my next favourite, the Space Fun. I think it lives up to its name and is a really fun print; it always reminds me of vintage wrapping paper!
Why did you choose a Connecta to carry your baby?
I’d always liked the idea of baby wearing, and was given a second hand hard-structured carrier by a friend when I was pregnant. When Baby Lighty arrived, he was really quite tiny at 6lbs 8.5oz, so this wasn’t suitable to use from newborn. We therefore bought a pre-tied stretchy for him, but even though they are supposed to be relatively easy to put on, we always found it a bit of a faff around to be honest, so only used it a couple of times!
When we went away with Baby Lighty when he was just 9 weeks old, we tried the second hand carrier for the first time. It was ok but we quickly found out that it would become uncomfortable for us to wear for long periods of time, not to mention not ergomonic for Baby Lighty’s hips, and we were constantly using the ‘scarf hack’ to try to adapt it a bit! It did allow us to discover that we liked the ease of buckles, however, and it was when I mentioned this on my Facebook baby group that one of my friends kindly suggested she send me her Connecta to try. As soon as it arrived, we were sold!
What is your favourite thing about your Connecta?
I have two favourite things about my Connecta:
1) the print! (I’m such a girl!)
2) the fact that it’s a bit of a conversation starter. I’m always being stopped when wearing Baby Lighty by people telling me how snug as a bug he looks, how lovely it is to see a mum holding their little one close, and how much they like the print. It’s lovely to hear that other parents respect the closeness that comes from wearing your baby, and I love it when a fellow mum or mum-to-be asks what make my carrier is and where she can get one from. I was once wearing Baby Lighty and had just dropped a kiss on his head when a man driving past wound down his car window to shout to me that it was the loveliest thing he’d seen all day! I mean, Baby Lighty was wearing a bear suit (as you do!), so he did look super cute, even more so than his every day super cute status, but it still warmed my heart to have a stranger comment in such a way.
To be honest, these are just the tip of the iceberg of reasons why we love the Connecta: we love how easy it is to put on and adjust, how small it folds up to fit in your bag, how comfy Baby Lighty seems in it and how excited he gets when he sees one of us putting it on ready to go out, etc. etc…
When do you find your Connecta most useful?
For me personally, I find the Connecta really useful when on public transport. I use the bus a lot, and I love taking Baby Lighty out and about in the Connecta when on the bus. No worrying about whether there will be space for the pushchair, being able to sit down with him securely on my lap, him being able to see out of the bus window (which he loves)…it’s also great when we go on the train, as our station doesn’t have a lift, nor does it have an access ramp to the London-bound platform, so it’s not easy to get a buggy on and off of the train. No such problems with the Connecta!
Mr Lighty would probably say that he finds it the most useful when we visit places which are not easily accessible by buggy. Our Connecta has been with us to National Trust properties, Centerparcs, car boot sales, the zoo, country parks, museums and craft and antique villages, among other places!
Share a photo of a favourite Connecta moment – tell us the story!
My favourite Connecta moment was with our borrowed Connecta: it was one of the first times we’d used it, to visit the National Trust’s Chartwell stately home when Baby Lighty was about 11 weeks old.
I think you can see how much I’m enjoying having him close within the Connecta, and I think this was really the moment when I fell in love with the Connecta as a sling. We also just happened to capture Baby Lighty’s cheekiness at exactly the right moment in time, with his tongue poking out! This photo always makes me smile, and I love it so much that it’s the profile picture of my blog, All Things Spliced!
I also love this photo of Mr Lighty’s first time baby wearing in our Connecta.
I just love how he’s looking at Baby Lighty, you can practically see the love shining from his face, and I know that he was feeling in that moment what I feel every time I have Baby Lighty in the sling, enjoying the closeness of wearing him.
I’m sure as we continue to use our baby Connecta, and then graduate to a toddler Connecta in the near future, there will be many, many more favourite Connecta moments for the Lightys.
Come back next Monday for the next instalment in our Me and My Connecta series when we will be hearing from Sara! Email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to find out how you can join in.
