And we’re kicking off our celebrations with more of your lovely stories about how your Connecta has helped you and your little one get the most out of life.
The aim of International Babywearing Week is to “celebrate, promote, advocate for, and focus media attention on the many benefits of babywearing“, and this year’s theme is “Best Seat in the House”. Babywearing International explain:
“The theme this year, “Best Seat in the House” is a well known English language idiom and is also a babywearing term. In a carrier, the seat is designed to support a child in a seated position. Babywearing also has the benefit of literally providing a worn child with the “Best Seat in the House.” While being carried a child gets to experience the comfort of closeness with their caregiver and to learn about the world by being exposed to much more by being worn. The benefits of babywearing are both for the child and their caregiver. Thanks to babywearing, regardless of where a child is worn they will always be in the front row with the “Best Seat in the House” for any activity or adventure.”
Exactly what this means varies for different families – something which is abundantly clear from the stories you share with us about life with your Connecta.
For Shelley, and for many others who have reaped the benefits of breastfeeding in the Connecta, “the best seat in the house is close access to the open-all-hours milk bar!”
Even without the comfort of a feed, being held close to a caregiver can give young children the security they need to embrace new experiences. Tina shared a picture of her daughter enjoying a charity football game, explaining how “being close to Daddy meant our little girl wasn’t scared by the noise”.
Nomes found the same thing on her daughter’s first trip to the beach at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia. She shared how her “little one got overwhelmed” but “a little snooze helped her be in a better mood for another try”.
Enjoying time on the beach was an experience shared by Eric, who said “I love the back carry and I enjoy listening to my little girl talking to me plus means I keep my hands free for my toddler!”
Being close enough to chat is one of the things that makes babywearing such a boost for literacy development, but it also means children (and their parents) can enjoy experiences that they would otherwise be excluded from, whether it’s completing the race for life like Rebecca…
Or attending a work conference like Victoria, who explained “mine has enabled me to keep up to date with work as a paediatrician while on maternity leave – here we are at a conference on infant sleep”.
