Ethical babywear brand Darlo are on a social mission to help malnourished children in India
UNICEF report that one in three of the world’s malnourished children live in India: this is what inspires and motivates us at Darlo every day.
Darlo is a babywear brand with an ethical conscience. A brand that is truly different to anything else on the market, with every purchase of our baby clothing, we will provide a whole week’s worth of meals for a child in India.
Whilst travelling I was overwhelmed by the lack of opportunities for children in developing countries and was constantly thinking of how I could help. When I returned to the UK and met my partner Jim we talked at length about my experiences and what we could do to help. We both felt that the attitude of ‘what difference can I make on my own’ is ridiculous and defeatist. Financially the contribution really doesn’t have to be a lot to make a profound difference in developing countries if enough people are involved. This is why at Darlo’s core is the belief that a little giving changes lives.
A chance meeting at an Indian Business Council event led us to meet Neishaa Gharat, Voluntary Director for Mumbai based charity Project Crayons. It was important to us that we worked with like-minded individuals who are continually motivated by the work they deliver, creating an impact in the communities they work. Together we decided to create the A Little Giving food programme which sees Darlo donate a week’s worth of meals to the children under their care for every product sold.
Following a successful launch in late 2014 we’re now continuing on our start-up journey and launching our second baby-wear collection this summer. Our range is produced from Indian organic cotton and manufactured in Indian GOTS (global organic textile standard) accredited factories. We draw our inspiration from the wonderful children at the Project Crayons’ home in Mumbai. The girls living at Project Crayons are full of smiles and energy. Their home is not a sad place; it’s bright, cheerful and alive with laughter and love. It’s filled with amazing characters who haven’t had the easiest start to life but yet have such a warming aura. We wanted to capture this and hope our range continues to represent their positivity and optimism.
We are delighted to say that to date we have now donated over 325 weeks’ worth of meals, or the equivalent of feeding 6 girls at Udan Ghaar for a whole year! This is only the beginning and we can’t wait for this number to grow and grow!
