Summer might be drawing to a close but memories of holidays and adventures are still fresh in our minds as we begin to focus in on the day to day routine of school and work… Thanks to Rachel from North East Sling Library for sharing hers!
This summer my boys and I have been very lucky in that we have had two summer holidays: this included four different airports, three different countries and six flights. As much as I have been excited about them since they were booked, the prospect of what was involved didn’t appeal quite as much.
I was delighted therefore when Connecta sent me a preschool version of their popular Solar Carrier which has been used a lot since it arrived with me in February. You can read my initial review here. Quite simply big kids like cuddles and sometimes need a carry too. This carrier therefore became the first item I packed in my luggage for both trips. Knowing that the Connecta Preschool can be used to 24kg I was confident that it would be perfect for our trip, and if necessary, be suitable to carry Henry (6.5 years old).
Why did I want a preschool Connecta? Luggage allowances on budget airlines are not great. The Solar Connecta is almost weightless. My kitchen scales won’t actually tell me how little it weighs as it doesn’t register. It packs tiny so I knew I could always take it with me whatever we had planned. It’s big (20 inches wide and 24 inches tall), so can carry either of my boys, it has crossable straps and blocks 99% of UVA and UVB rays. The sun protection element was a big bonus on our first trip where Isaac had a meltdown every time we tried to apply sun lotion. He is very fair and burns very easily. The Connecta Solar allowed us to cover him up and then when in the sling we managed to get sun block on the exposed elements (Sun lotions and slings are not a good combination but in this scenario it was what worked). I even used its sun protective qualities when my feet were getting hot while at the pool; it made a lovely ‘sun blanket’.
Isaac’s legs, as I imagined, did get tired. Busy non-stop action filled days with several late nights and missed naps meant that he was exhausted. Although we didn’t ever use for long periods (the longest stretch we had was 40 minutes when I tried to get him to sleep) it was perfect for when we did need it. Carrying him for the mile walk to the restaurant on our first proper evening in Malta and attempting to get him to sleep on the beach in Majorca the Connecta Solar was perfect.
Our trip to Malta saw it used much more frequently than Majorca. We hired a car while in Majorca so did not need to walk as far or use the public buses to get across the country but knowing that it was in my bag “just in case” was perfect.
It came into its own on our return journey when Isaac became unwell while we waited in the departure lounge of Malta airport for our flight home. Feverish, upset and inconsolable the Connecta Preschool was taken from my bag and peace restored. We were then able to exit departures, go to the airport pharmacy, queue once again for security, go through security and re-join my mum, stepdad and Henry all without having to take him out. I honestly don’t know how I would have managed the 90 minutes from him becoming upset to boarding our flight, I certainly know we wouldn’t have been popular on the flight if I hadn’t managed to console him. On our return to the UK it allowed me to get off the plane, navigate security and get to our car. I just wish I had remembered to put it in my hand luggage for our return flight from Majorca!
Thank you so much Connecta Baby for making big kid versions of your carriers. Although Isaac has this week started school I know the preschool Connecta Baby Carriers I own will continue to be popular; not just with me but the parents who use my sling library too!
